This is even more off topic than usual. Just curious if anyone else is interested in the Nintendo Switch? I've been a Nintendo fan much longer than an H!P fan, and as some of you will know for me it was the one that led to the other. I'll be honest, participating in more Switch discussions elsewhere is one of the things that's distracted me from this place recently.
I got an Amazon preorder, but it's yet to arrive. Shoooould be any time in the next few hours.
Google Translate is of course something we use a lot around here, but there's a new improvement. For some time their smartphone app has allowed you to use a camera and detect text which it then automatically translates. This leaves even more room for error since it has to properly read the characters, but oh well. It also only worked with supported languages. Japanese support has recently been added, though!
Results are pretty mixed, but it's still pretty cool. I was trying it on my physical CDs and a lot of the time the text was too stylized for it to pick up properly, and even when it was picking things up would flicker between many absurd possible translations. Sometimes the results were pretty accurate. I've included a couple of those here. I also included some of the Cowboy Bebop Blu-ray--I figured that with big bold text it would have an easier time reading it, but I guess not!
Several times before I've mentioned dora_ts17, from whom I've probably got a majority of my physical discs at this point. He's got a huge selection, BUT he isn't the only game in town so I thought it would be good to have a place to mention other good people to get H!P stuff from.
I just got some stuff from spiderpage. A smaller selection of H!P specific goods, and unfortunately things aren't categorized so you kind of just have to browse through a few hundred items. At first glance the prices appear to be a bit more than dora's, but some (not all) have free shipping which largely cancels it out. Another big bonus, at least for those of us in North America, is that her items ship not from Japan but California, so the shipping takes days instead of weeks.
You may remember there used to be a thing that would show up on all page views (not counting mobile version) that would show the latest files added, but Wikia ditched it. Someone recently wrote something that allows something similar to take its place, and I finally got around to trying it.
Here's where you can find the code. If you want it to take effect for all Wikia sites, you can paste it in your global JavaScript file, located at the community Wikia site. Mine is at http://community.wikia.com/wiki/User:JoshuaJSlone/global.js, and getting to yours would just be a matter of changing the user name.
There's a place in the code where you can make a few choices as to how it will appear. One is choosing how many of the most recent files it will show. The other lets you choose between a mode where the sizes are larger and you can see more information about the files, or one where it just displays them smaller. If you're not afraid to try changing bits of the code you can probably customize the appearance even more to your liking, but here's how the two standard options look for me:
Until this I wasn't sure it was possible to customize what shows up in the "rail" to the right. I'm curious if there's anything else interesting to go over there.
Juice=Juice's new single releases April 8, but another thing releasing that day that might be of interest to Hello! Project fans is Renga no Ie, the new album from Nakajima Takui that contains the original versions of Taiki Bansei and Tsugi no Kado wo Magare, plus thirteen other tracks.
Looks like the album will be released on US iTunes with all tracks intact. Album preorder price is $15.99. Formatting isn't very international-friendly, so try searching for nakajimatakui or the album name 煉瓦の家 to find it.
