Hello! Project Sorters / Autosorting Your Favorites

Hello, everyone. I'm finally ready to share a project I've been wanting to make a reality for a few months. Most of the work has been done in the past few days, as these things usually happen, haha. There is a TLDR at the bottom if you just want the links and to see how the sorters work.

As of right now, I've finished and updated all the current and some former Hello! Project groups - any others are subject to consideration given that their discography is a bit limited (example, W; sorry Josh) or soloists with perhaps less demand (example: Goto Maki). In the future (perhaps very soon), I'm planning on making a single sorter containing all past and present members of Hello! Project, as it seems silly to make individual ones for each group in some cases. Request at will, and I'll see what I can do!

TDLR; Explanation below

Steps:

1) Choose between two songs until you reach 100% completion. The length of time it takes depends on the amount of songs involved. (For example, Berryz Koubou took me 185 battles and perhaps 7-10 minutes while watching a movie.)

That's all there is to it! If you DO NOT want ties at all, do not choose "I Like Both" or "No Opinion. The screenshot I've provided shows the end result.

This blog links to all existing sorters I've made. Click on the image or name of a group to go there. DO NOT NAVIGATE AWAY WHILE SORTING OR YOU WILL LOSE YOUR PROGRESS. http://helloprojectsort.tumblr.com/

Citation/Verification templates

So we have messages that will say things like unverified claims will be removed after X amount of time, but isn't it a hassle that unless you want to go searching in a page's edit history you won't know how long something has been around--or alternately how long someone has questioned a claim on the page? I was thinking that a template could be made to help with this, but then I realized that I didn't need to reinvent the wheel since something like this almost surely already existed--I know I've seen things marked as "verification overdue" at other wikis, and I'm sure that wasn't done by hand.

And sure enough. Here is one such template: https://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Template:Verify The Verify template is used with a time stamp so that it will know how long it's been there. If it's been there a long time, it will do extra things like add things to "Citation verification overdue" categories. I'm sure we could modify this with our own messages, categories, whatever else we wanted to tweak.

Good addition? Know of something similar that would be even better? If you like the one linked to, what would you want add or changed?

10 Years of Hello! Project Wiki

If you've paid attention to the intro text on the front page you may have seen this coming, but since it's easy to look past the same unchanging text after many many views it kind of snuck up on me. Today makes 10 years since Hello! Project Wiki was founded!

Our connections to the beginning are pretty tenuous at this point. The founder and editors from the early days (and early years really) are long gone. Few pages that existed at the time would look anything like their modern counterpart, though the basic setup of today's front page still has a lot in common with what it looked like on day one. https://helloproject.wikia.com/wiki/Hello!_Project_Wiki?oldid=3040

On to decade two!

Discussions?

Hey guys. As you can see here, someone from Fandom has contacted us about interest in turning on Discussions, a newer feature that's been in the works for some time and is intended as the eventual overall replacement for Forum and more, but at this time is possible to make coexist.
You can read some more about it in an old Fandom staff post about it here or the Discussions FAQ.
It's been a while since I even thought about Discussions so I don't have an immediate comment, but as I'm about to head out for work I thought I'd at least pop this up so anyone else can respond about it more quickly than I'm ready to.

More Google Translate

Last year I showed some images from the Google Translate mobile app's ability to translate images live. The results were more funny than useful. HOWEVER, I've learned of something that was possible even back then but I just plain missed it, which ups its usefulness considerably. By pressing the icon seen at the bottom left of my screenshots there, it's possible to load up a saved image rather than having a live camera view. This allows you to use a much clearer source image, and not have to worry about it changing what it thinks it's seeing every time your hand twitches. For this example I still just used a decent photo taken with my phone, so it's not even the best case scenario.

It then highlights the parts of it where it thinks it detects readable text and lets you choose, or just hit Select All, which I did. Here's the text it detected, or at least the beginning of it.

And similarly, the beginning of its translation. Which is of course not perfect, but Google Translate never is.
Unfortunately still no way to do this outside of the mobile app, but oh well.
Also, "It is a manner story of a hot girl child who touched it all" is one of my new favorite Google Translate-isms.

Category sorting tricks

I've been using this wiki a long time, but one thing I never messed with until now was more advanced options for sorting things in categories--mostly because just leaving things as they are by default is usually fine. But looking in a DVD magazine category and seeing things like Vol.5 ending up ordered between Vol.49 and Vol.50 is a bit icky, not to mention instances where a group has had an altered name.
I'm working on the existing DVD magazine entries right now, so no need to worry about them. But for other similar cases and future new pages, here's how it works. There are two ways to go about it.
First, there's DEFAULTSORT. Use it like
{{DEFAULTSORT:Morning Musume DVD Magazine Vol.002}}
I don't think placement on the page really matters, but I've been leaving them right at the bottom under the categories. What this does is tell the system "In all categories, use THIS text for sorting instead of the page name." In the above example, Morning Musume DVD Magazine Vol.2 will no longer be listed right before Vol.20 (and in the far future, Vol.200).
The second way is to provide an alternate sorting name for specific categories. Where would this be useful? I used it for a collaboration DVD Magazine between two groups, so it could end up in chronological order in both groups' lists.
[[Category:Morning Musume DVD Magazines|Morning Musume DVD Magazine Vol.062a]]
[[Category:ANGERME DVD Magazines|ANGERME DVD Magazine Vol.0010a]]
Now in Morning Musume's list it will come after Vol.62, and in ANGERME's list it will come after S/mileage Vol.10 (the extra 00s I used to put all the S/mileage ones before the ANGERME ones).
Realistically since most things that have volumes don't get to double digits, they'll all end up sorting fine without anything being done to them. Triple digits (Morning Musume) and name changes (Morning Musume, S/mileage) requiring more extensive changes are even more rare.

Scanning

I know I am an outlier in that I sometimes scan images, for things there aren't discography pages for or where the discography images are old and awful. Does anyone else ever scan? I'm kind of curious whether the reason there's not more is lack of having interesting things to scan, lack of scanners themselves, or just that it seems like too much of a hassle.

Discord?

Some time back we toggled on the Fandom/Wikia chat, but I don't think it ever got much use. I idled there for a while, but long term it wasn't worth leaving a tab for it open all the time.
I'm wondering if anyone thinks it might be worthwhile to set up something like a Discord server? It's something that seems to be increasing in popularity and I've started using it for some other purposes in the last few months--so even something like long-term idling would be simpler for people like me who are already running the desktop or mobile app anyway.

Domains update

Some of you may remember that I keep a few H!P group domain names registered: both factories and the yearly Morning Musume. I consider this "benevolent squatting", since UP-FRONT doesn't care to grab them themselves and when others register them they either don't point to anywhere much interesting or are just trying to be resold.
Previously I've had the domains pointing to group's pages here, or with language codes used as sudbdomains going to the other languages' wikis, or things like youtube. going to the YouTube channel. Recently I had another idea for expansion: member names. So now you can go to

http://fukumuramizuki.morningmusume18.com
http://hirose.kobushifactory.com
http://rikoyamagishi.tsubakifactory.com
and end up at the appropriate member pages. This works for morningmusume18.com, kobushifactory.com, and tsubakifactory.com. For all current members it should work for last+first, first+last, just first, or just last--with the exception of where there'd be a conflict like just plain haruna for Morning Musume which could be Iikubo or Ogata.

DVD Magazine/Pamphlet info

A big thing missing in many of these pages is the tracklist--which we can often see, but lack the kanji skills to properly type out. While searching for some info related to one magazine a bit ago, though, I ran across a relevant section of a Japanese wiki. It lists most or all of the magazines and pamphlets through July 2011, and though it's far from comprehensive, it also has the tracklist for many of them.
I'm a little hesitant to just trust some third party info source, but at least in the cases where we can see it matches the back cover or DVD menus this seems pretty good.

Not Hello! no Theme

Not the stupidest thing I've made, and far from the most effort to get it going, but I'm still pretty happy with it. The completely useless Template:HelloHelloHello.

Hello! Project Mobile

As of today, Hello! Project Mobile now accepts credit card payments. Before only fans with docomo, Soft Bank, or au as their phone carriers could subscribe, which was impossible outside of Japan. I haven't tried it yet, but this must mean overseas fans should now be able to?
A list of what the 400 and 700 yen subscriptions both include:

Tour Nikki - diaries released during concert tours
Staff Nikki - information you can only get from staff
Hello! Shot - photos of members posted every weekday
Shop Photo - photos, which are sold at the official Hello! Project Shop, posted in large size
Hello! Q&A - members answer questions sent in by fans (I believe these are the classic "Pocket Morning" questions)
Duu Demo Ii Shashinkan - gallery of photos taken by Kudo Haruka
Juice=Juice no Like=Like - gallery of photos taken by Juice=Juice members
Tsubaki Factory no Hana Moyou - flower-related photos by Tsubaki Factory members

HELLO! PROJECT 2015 NEWCOMER

Just something I ran across while looking around eBay that we don't have here but there isn't enough to go on to put it someplace proper, so I'll mention it here in the Forum for now.

The item description claims it was available at Hello! Project 2015 WINTER, so my best guess is it's something like a DVD Magazine or DVD Pamphlet concerning the various new members performing for the first time there--though at least from what we can see of the disc, it doesn't seem to mention the new ANGERME members.

EDIT: Google led me to one relevant result at JPLOP, an image saved from an old page of concert goods. Looks like there was a second disc for new ANGERME members and the new unit that wasn't yet called Kobushi Factory.

YouTube quality on old videos kinda sucks

I've ripped some videos from Single Vs I've purchased, and was curious how it compared to what was available on YouTube. The difference was quite a bit more than I expected given that they're the same resolution. The difference in bitrate explains some of it, but I'm still surprised at how much they differ. Even scaled down like below there are noticeable differences in color, saturation, sharpness.
These comparisons aren't exact to the frame; I just got the videos going in different players and used quick taps of the pause button to get them near sync. On the left, 37 MB MP4 downloaded from YouTube. On the right, DVD version I ripped to a 76 MB MP4 file.
